Climate change and lifestyle changes increase the risk of mould growth
Climate change
Climate change is now one of the most talked about topics in Denmark, both in the media and around the lunch table. But is it real and will climate change affect your and my everyday life? Yes, in fact, we are already seeing the beginnings of change. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency states that the average temperature in Denmark has increased by 1.5 degrees and precipitation has increased by 15% since they started recording temperature and precipitation.
DMI predicts that the sea will rise by 30-60 cm by the turn of the century as a result of rising temperatures. This will increase the risk of coastal flooding and put a large number of houses and buildings at risk. The increased precipitation will affect groundwater levels in Denmark, which will rise by half a metre across much of the country and locally by several metres in some places.
Climate change brings with it a growing risk of flooding and moisture intrusion in our homes, either as a result of rising sea levels along the coasts or rising groundwater inland. The increasing moisture penetration in homes and buildings creates better conditions for mould growth, while the milder climate extends the season for the spread of mould spores. This significantly increases the risk of mould growth in our homes and buildings.
Lifestyle changes
At a time when mould pressure on our homes and buildings is increasing, we spend more and more time indoors. Today, we are more likely than ever to play sports, exercise and fitness indoors. In addition, we spend more time on indoor entertainment such as computer games, TV, streaming and social media. It is estimated that today we spend 90% of our time indoors and around 65% in our homes. This means we are increasingly exposed to a growing impact of indoor allergens, building fumes, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from perfumes and household products, and not least moulds both outside and especially in our homes.
Asthma and allergy researchers now agree that increasingly sealing our homes and buildings to save energy and spending more time indoors are contributing factors to the growing number of asthma and allergy cases we see in Denmark today.
Climate-friendly construction and renovation
The first indicator of moisture in homes and buildings is usually mould growth. Today, there is an increasing need for products that protect our indoor climate from threats such as mould. Protox ApS has built up extensive expertise in mould control and odour remediation in homes and buildings.

However, not all products are equally suitable for fighting mould in indoor environments. Protox's products are designed to combat and prevent mould in indoor environments without leaving unwanted residual chemistry and are tested indoor climate neutral. Protox Mould is designed for the prevention of moulds and Protox Hysan has earned a position as the professional's preferred choice when it comes to mould and odour remediation in Danish homes and buildings.
Protox can help restoration companies and others prepare for a future with a growing number of mould infestations in our homes and buildings. Protox also offers expert assistance and employee training in mould control and prevention.
